Jesus Has Told Us That “Believing Is Seeing!”
John 8:12 (NIV)
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
We are still somewhat in awe of the events of a two-week period, which changed this world forever! Jesus was hailed as a hero and called the King of Israel on a weekend, and then many of the same people who were lauding Him, began to cry out “Crucify Him.” It is to some degree the way of this cursed world in which we live yet today. On Easter Sunday Catholics were joyful over seeing Pope Francis appearing physically improved, then the next day the Lord claimed his immortal soul, and as we say he died! As Christians we must believe that we all have an immortal piece in us that is god-like in that it is immortal, and will never actually die, it just leaves this earth, and goes to another waiting area, until God is ready to move it to either a heavenly place or to a place of eternal separation from Jesus Christ!
Followers of Jesus Christ will never go into that eternal place of darkness and godlessness, which we refer to as hell. Jesus was referring to this place of eternal light in the selected verse, when He said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." Are you a believer? The answer to this question is the most important response you will ever make, while you still walk this earth! Have you believed even though you may have never seen Jesus, and/or you have never heard Jesus speak to your heart?
The Apostle named Thomas came to be referred as “Doubting Thomas,” because he questioned Jesus a couple of times as recorded in the Scriptures. This reference recorded by John was about Jesus’ resurrection. Now Thomas (called Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he said to them, "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it." A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe." Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!" Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." (John 20:24-29).
None of us reading this today have lived with Jesus and ate and slept with Him while still living on this earth, as Thomas did. Therefore, we are included in those people Jesus tells us will be blessed if we believe, yet we have not seen Him. Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." Do you feel the blessing in your life especially in this Easter season?
Some people will tell you that “seeing is believing,” but Jesus has told us that “believing is seeing!” If we believe that Jesus was the Son of Man in this cursed world, and Jesus is the Son of God, and offered the perfect sacrifice so your sins will be covered and thus forgiven and your immortal soul will end up in heaven, when Jesus calls you home to be with Him forever.
Paul wrote about this ability to believe without seeing, as none of us saw the creation of this world but we can see and experience this wonderful place this world remains even though it is cursed. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. (Romans 1:20). When you see the beauty of flowers with many colors you certainly can believe Jesus created such beauty to be enjoyed in the light from the sun Jesus also created. The design is very obvious and is a dim reflection of what heaven will be like.
All humans have inherited a sinful nature from that first or original sin, and Jesus left behind the Holy Spirit behind on this earth to help us contend with the temptation of this cursed world. So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law. (Galatians 5:16-18). This Spirit supports believers, and they can thus avoid the snares and temptations offered by this world cursed by Satanic inspiration!
When you came to believe and took on the tasks of trying to become more Christ-like every day, the Satanic temptations were recognized as not good for bringing you enjoyment, so you were then better protected from wanting do it, “because everybody is doing it!” You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. (Romans 8:9-10).
Did you get that, “But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness.” This Holy Spirit came into your immortal soul immediately when you accepted your salvation by taking Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, and you were born again as a new creation! Now that is a belated Happy Easter free eternal gift!
