When You Die In This Temporary World, Where Will Your Immortal Soul End Up?
Philippians 3:14 (NIV)
I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
Are you working on becoming more like Jesus Christ every day? Do you find it somewhat difficult for you to feel good about your daily walk and how well you are progressing on this task of becoming more like Jesus in this cursed world? In this world we may have many goals we set for ourselves, and then there may be a few people who you love who share in the goal setting process! However, is Jesus as large of an influence as He should be? Paul is trying to point all professing followers of Jesus Christ to make your most important goal is “to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”
Do you still feel tempted to do some earthly activities that you do not believe Jesus would do or did do when He walked this earth as the Son of man? Paul wrote about such feeling that he experienced in his walk with Jesus. I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. (Romans 7:18-19). You (We) have an earthly body and a sinful nature and becoming a follower of Jesus Christ does not change this, however, being born again does give you an increased ability to control your sinful nature and help you to avoid these earthly temptations.
This term being born again means you are immediately changed and give you an improved view of this world, and it puts you on that narrow path that will eventually lead your soul to heaven. This also immediately allows you to join the family of God our heavenly Father. John wrote about this miracle. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. (John 1:12-13). Your sins are forgiven and forgotten by God.
While it is true that your soul is destined for heaven, your body is still living in a cursed world, and you still have a sinful nature. As Paul writes about this new creation you have become, your thought process is changed and your ability to resist temptation has been increased too. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! (2 Corinthians 5:17). This dynamic change in you allows you to believe the accounts in your Bible I like to refer to as the promises of God. You now believe that you are on that arrow path that being born again has put you on!
The writer of Hebrews wrote about this faith in Jesus Christ that allows you develop a hope for your future based on your faith in these promises of God. Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. (Hebrews 11:1). Many people base their hope on things they see in this world. Believers should not limit their hope on things seen, but we should enjoy this world Jesus created and maintains for us, but our greatest hope should be placed on our heavenly hope in someday being in the Paradise of God with our brother Jesus.
Paul wrote about how Jesus Christ not only created this earth but that He continues to maintain it for mankind until it will be replaced by a new world, AKA heaven! For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. (Colossians 1:16-17). Remember, this earth was created to be heaven, but sin entered it, thus all of mankind needs a Savior to be the perfect sacrifice to allow God to forgive all our sins, when we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior!
The writer of Hebrews teaches about joining together with other likeminded believers, “spur one another on towards love and good deeds.” And let us consider how we may spur one another on towards love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. (Hebrews 10:24-25). While each person’s salvation is an individual act of being born again into the family of God, meeting together as members of that family is required to be able to “spur one another on towards love and good deeds.”
In this world there are many questions to be asked and answered, but when it comes to having hope for your future there is only one answer! Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. (Hebrews 12:1-2).
When you die in this temporary world, where will your immortal soul end up? If you have accepted salvation by becoming a follower of Jesus Christ, your soul will end up in heaven, otherwise it will end up in hell!
