Jesus Wants His Followers To Say; “I Never Met A Person I Did Not Love!”
John 3:16 (NIV)
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
God told His chosen people that they (we) must first return God’s love by loving Him in return, and if we are able to do that, then we will be able to love human beings too! The command is stated as follows. Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. (Deuteronomy 6:4-5). This is likely the basis of completing the Golden Rule by then being able to love your brothers and sisters, as God loves you! Without our first love we may come to hate other people. We see this in our world today in people murdering other people every day in the news.
Now let us change the tone of this commentary to be based on you being first loved by God Our Father who is in heaven, so that can begin to or continue to love every human being, and in that loving attitude we need to try and share our joy through loving them as they are. In the selected verse because of His love for all human beings on this earth, God sent His Son as the perfect sacrifice to offer salvation for all of us. Jesus was sent into the cursed world for salvation of all people! God desires for all people to be saved by following His Son, His intent is to save all not to condemn anyone. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. (John 3:17).
When Jesus walked this earth as a human being, He taught this love that His followers must possess of loving everyone, even those who do not choose to love you! This was news to this cursed world and was meant to bring us all together in love. Jesus taught, “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. (Matthew 5:43-45). Followers of Jesus Christ are expected to work on becoming Christ-like, and thus, become capable of loving everyone living in this cursed world.
Paul wrote about this Christ-like love that will over time change the true follower to be capable of coming to be able to love every human being, even the ones you do not like, and maybe more importantly, to love those people who do not like you or even those who hate you! Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. (1 Corinthians 13:4-5). Will Rogers once said (paraphrase), “I never met a man I did not like!” Jesus wants His followers to say; “I never met a person I did not Love!”
Paul also wrote about a person who does not genuinely love others, but they do perform helpful deeds for other people, and they may be some form of a seer, and even be active in their church, but they are not doing good deeds through a loving attitude. If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing. (1 Corinthians 13:1-3).
Paul also wrote about how you are changed when you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! (2 Corinthians 5:17). You were changed immediately when you accepted Jesus, and then you started working on becoming more Christ-like every day. Then Paul wrote about how our minds become improved and we come to understand more about what Jesus taught his disciples for you to follow. "For who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct him?" But we have the mind of Christ. (1 Corinthians 2:16). We can never know everything Christ knew but we do need to enhance our minds to become closer to thinking like Jesus with continued study and practice of working on become more Christ-like.
When Jesus departed this cursed world, He left behind the Holy Spirit to be available to everyone who is working on becoming a true follower through love! However, as it is written: "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him"—but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. (1 Corinthians 2:9). This Holy Spirit is carried around within us by indwelling our immortal soul, and aids us in praying, even to the point of giving us words or thoughts when choosing to pray to our heavenly Father!
Jesus’ brother James wrote about the need for us to confess our sins to God, and to our brothers and sisters whom we share a belief in Jesus Christ. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. (James 5:16). Do you believe your prayers are “powerful and effective.”
Ever wonder how often you should pray? Paul wrote about being joyful as often as you can, no matter what your current circumstances are. Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else. Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. (1 Thessalonians 5:15-18). Do not worry about when is the best time to pray, as Paul says, “pray continually” and “give thanks in all circumstances.” And why would this make sense? Because “for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
James closes us today with his thoughts about when you should pray! Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise. Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. (James 5:13-15). Notice James makes a point that prayer may be being offered by a sinner, and when completed, “he will be forgiven.”
Note here: these offers of being happy in prayer must be done as part of a community of likeminded believers. Are you attending a church of your choice to pray with your brothers and sisters in Christ? If not, it makes me wonder, “If (you) he has sinned, (you) he will be forgiven?” “Be happy in Jesus, just trust and obey, for there is no other Way!”
