This Is Good, And Pleases God Our Savior, Who Wants All Men To Be Saved And To Come To A Knowledge Of The Truth.
Matthew 5:18 (NIV)
I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.
This terminology “I tell you the truth” occurs 87 times in the NIV Translation of the New Testament! It seems like Jesus was trying to tell those around Him something about truth! In the selected verse Jesus is emphasizing the fact that God has given mankind some rules that if we obey them our life will be better in this cursed world, and that we need to try our best to understand these commands, so we can follow these good instructions. Jesus also makes it clear here that these commands will never change or be changed, so we can learn them and obey them. Man made laws are ever changing, and there are too many of them for anyone to ever be able to obey them all!
Jesus gives us a great promise that all our sins can be forgiven, and even our outbursts of profanity, when Jesus says, “I tell you the truth, all the sins and blasphemies of men will be forgiven them.” Then Jesus issues us a warning “But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin."” Jesus said, I tell you the truth, all the sins and blasphemies of men will be forgiven them. But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin." He said this because they were saying, "He has an evil spirit." (Mark 3:28-30). Jesus was saying this because some people were claiming Jesus was doing His good works because "He has an evil spirit."
Since Jesus is the Son of God and thus a person of the Triune God, if anyone blasphemes any of the three persons of this God, then they are guilty of an unforgivable sin. When a person uses the term “Jesus Christ” as a curse word, they may be guilty of an unforgivable sin! Many people in this cursed world hold as truth many beliefs that are man-made ideas may not be true. It is important for all of us to try our best to cling to God breathed truths, these can be found in our Bible. Make sure you allow a lot of your time in this world to studying God’s Word!
When Pilate was interviewing Jesus he asked an important question, "What is truth?" Pilate asked. "You are a king, then!" said Pilate. Jesus answered, "You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me." "What is truth?" Pilate asked. With this he went out again to the Jews and said, "I find no basis for a charge against him. But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release ‘the king of the Jews’?" They shouted back, "No, not him! Give us Barabbas!" Now Barabbas had taken part in a rebellion. (John 18:37-40).
Jesus told Pilate a wonderful truth that all professing Christians must believe! "You are a king, then!" said Pilate. Jesus answered, "You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me." Jesus told Pilate, and more importantly He told us the most important truth we must live by in this cursed world. If we believe it, our immortal soul will end up in heaven.
When Jesus walked this earth as the Son of Man He was tempted by Satan, as we are. Like us Jesus had to eat to survive. At the point of this temptation Jesus was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, "If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread." Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” (Matthew 4:3-4). Food is important for our survival in this world, but the truth is more important than even food, as truth is needed for our eternal life. If food is all we have in this life, then our eternity will be spent in hell with Satan!
If we have that most important truth Jesus taught His disciples and we try our best to follow His commands, we will remain in His love. Jesus has said, If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. (John 15:10). Jesus was able to complete His mission to offer salvation to everyone who believes He is the Son of God. Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:9-11).
This salvation plan is the only one offered to mankind. Paul wrote about how this truth became known to him and how he holds it in great love and a strong belief. For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. (Romans 1:16). Paul wrote to his friend and disciple Timothy to help guide him in his ministry. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all men—the testimony given in its proper time. (1 Timothy 2:3-6).
Here is that word again “truth!” How God is pleased when people believe this truth about His Son! As Paul wrote, “This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.” Do you believe the truth about Jesus Christ that He is the one and only Savior of the World? What a friend and brother we have in Jesus!
