The Greatest Gift We Can Offer Our Descendants In This Cursed World Is Our Love Inspired By The Hope We Have In The Promises Of God To Save Our Immortal Souls!
Ephesians 6:4 (NIV)
Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.
During our Bible Study class last Sunday it was said, “It is difficult to love someone whom you do not like!” Jesus taught that His followers are expected to love everyone, even those who have chosen to be your enemy! A man named Will Rogers once said, “I never met a man I did not like!” His original statement was a little different, but Will Rogers gave instructions to have this message engraved into his grave marker. "You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. (Matthew 5:43-45).
If you are reading this today and you are a father, grandfather, great-grandfather, etc. of a young child, and you profess to be a follower of Jesus Christ, then you need to place a large importance on what today’s selected verse says about your Christian responsibility. First entertain and joyfully embrace the child or children God has blessed you with, and as Paul wrote, “do not exasperate your children!” Now more importantly help their parents to “bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.”
At least on Father’s Day, if God has blessed you with a loving wife who is still living, be sure to first give thanks to Jesus for blessing you and be sure to somehow treat her with a special attention, and be sure to tell her you love her! Paul wrote about comparing family love to the love Christ has for His earthly church. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, (Ephesians 5:25-26).
Jesus while still living in this cursed world knew that God views all human beings as being evil, because we all possess a sinful nature inherited from the first or original sin. Jesus once said, "Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" (Luke 11:11-13). The greatest gift we can offer our descendants in this cursed world is our love inspired by the hope we have in the promises of God to save the immortal souls of all the followers of Jesus Christ!
Now for the negative side of this commentary. The evil element of this cursed world is all too obvious, as we see hatred in the form of murder of each other, and the clamoring of even the desire to murder even the unborn babies, we call it abortion. Paul wrote about the reason for such desires. Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is on earthly things. But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Saviour from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body. (Philippians 3: 19-21).
People who have not understood the hope that becoming followers of Jesus Christ offers will continue to lead an earthly life that will result in their immortal soul ending up in hell. The writer of Proverbs wrote about how believing and thus keeping the commands of God will result in salvation, but if there is no belief then their soul faces the second death. He who keeps the commandment keeps his soul, But he who is careless of conduct will die. (Proverbs 19:16 NAS95). If you live in this cursed world as though there is no tomorrow, then you may be right about your immortal soul as it will not end up with Jesus preparing a room for you in the Paradise of God!
It seems we are living in a dangerous world where a simple disagreement can explode into a fight, or even worse, the other person pulls out a weapon and injuries or kills you! Being aware of this dangerous impulse apparently in many people you may disagree with it is important for us to be peace makers to try our best to be cordial. Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. (Romans 12:17). As Paul has directed try to be the peace maker, if disagreement arises.
We are told that God allows Satan to tempt people in this cursed world. Paul wrote about this situation. The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. (2 Corinthians 4:4). There are more people in this world who have not chosen to believe and become followers of Jesus Christ.
When any person comes to believe in Jesus Christ, and they confess their sins to God, and promise to try and avoid sinful thoughts and situations, they are changed and we call it being born again, because their immortal soul is now on that narrow path so their soul to end up in heaven someday! Okay here is the pitch for all of us reading this today! If you believe you know someone who is not on that narrow path, you need to tell them how Jesus/Holy Spirit guiding your life has improved your hope for the future, as you know your soul is heading for heaven, when it is ready for all believers!
Father's Day in 2026 is celebrated on Sunday, June 21, 2026. Always falling on the third Sunday in June, this year's holiday also coincides with the June solstice, marking the first day of astronomical summer. So, this year Father’s Day also kicks off the official start of the summer season.
