The Key Command From Jesus Is “This Is My Command: Love Each Other.”
Leviticus 19:18 (NIV)
"‘Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.
Some people may attribute this command to “love your neighbor as yourself.” To be a command first given by Jesus Christ while He still walked this earth as the Son of man, but of course, the selected verse is taken from the Old Testament and being said by God, or more specifically by God the Father. And it is important to remember that when Jesus walked this earth the Old Testament was the only Bible that existed! And we know that Jesus studied the Bible when He walked this earth. It amazes me that many professing Christians have never read the Bible of our day from cover-to-cover in their lifetime! All professing Christians should be studying their Bible every day! Do you?
Let us stay in the Old Testament for a bit and read what Isaiah wrote about getting our strength through studying God’s Word. Our hope is based on belief that God’s Word gives us the ability to come to know who God is, and thus, to better understand who Jesus Christ is, as they are part of the Triune God. He (God) gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. (Isaiah 40:29-31). Our “hope in the LORD will renew (our) strength.”
When Jesus Christ left this earth, He left the Holy Spirit behind to help His followers understand the teachings He left behind through the writers of the New Testament, and to assist His followers with their prayer life. Paul wrote about this to the church in Rome, and for us. In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will. (Romans 8:26-27). As Paul wrote we the follows of Jesus are helped to live and pray more in line with God’s will “because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will.”
Did you notice that title for you a saint, “the Spirit intercedes for the saints!” Paul wrote too that this Spirit offers His saints protection from Satan. And pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men, for not everyone has faith. But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen and protect you from the evil one. (2 Thessalonians 3:2-3). As a saint you are protected and aided to pray more in line with God’s will. Then Paul wrote how this Spirit also brings Jesus’ saints peace. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-7).
The writer of Hebrews wrote about how Jesus is sustaining the earth “by his powerful word.” The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs. Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation? (Hebrews 1:3-4, 14). Next the writer reports how Jesus “provided purification for sins” then He “sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.” Therefore, “he became as much superior to the angels.” Then the writer states the purpose God assigned to angels! Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?
This seemed important to state as some religions believe that Jesus Christ was an angel, and if true, it would mean He could not be the Savior of the world, and He could not be the Son of God! Such religions do not believe in the Trinity, or three persons in one God! As Christians we believe in the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, the three persons in one God!
John wrote what Jesus taught about how He obeyed His Fathers commands and thus, He expect His followers to obey His commands. If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. (John 15:10-12). Here we remain in Jesus’ love if obey His command!
You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit—fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. This is my command: Love each other. (John 15:14-17). Yes, you can be a friend of Jesus if you obey. “Trust and obey for there’s no other way, but to thrust and obey!”
Notice the important command that Jesus taught His followers to observe. It is stated in both conversations Jesus had in a training session with His disciples. The key command from Jesus is “This is my command: Love each other.” In this world today, as we are killing each other in wars, and in the streets, and aborting unwanted children through abortion, it is a shame that everyone does not know Jesus’ command and find a Way in their hardened hearts to follow His command, “This is my command: Love each other.”
