There Is No Authority Except That Which God Has Established!
Romans 13:1 (NIV)
Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.
November is the month in which Americans celebrate Thanksgiving, and it is also when we schedule the national elections, and many local elections and vote on other referendums. Thank God, that all the election ads have now ended. Now we think we have voted for the least evil of the candidates! The Bible tells us we live in a cursed world, and it becomes obvious that it is correct that this is an overall evil place where Satan has enormous influence in such events. As believers we hold the hope that there is evidence of more good intent than evil in this country. Have you thanked Jesus yet for His guidance on the outcome of this election, even if you do not agree with the outcome?
From studying our Bible, we can also read about how God used evil leaders to inflect harm on God’s people when they fell away from Him and came to believe in false god’s and failed to obey God’s commands. In this country it is legal to dispose of unwanted babies who are still living in their mother’s womb. This was a very important issue in how many people voted for candidates that favored their view on this issue. In many states this issue was changed from a strong stand against late term abortions to allowing women to choose to abort the baby later in the pregnancy term by voters wanting to allow abortions later in the pregnancy term!
I do not believe that human babies still living in their mother’s womb can be disposed of as an unwanted result of sexual intercourse and therefore it can just be disposed of because it was not planned by the women and her male partner. Did God allow and condone this sexual intercourse between two consenting human beings? If the answer is Yes! Then I believe the potential mother has a God commanded requirement to carry the baby to term and give the baby life in this cursed world!
I believe God created human beings as the last miracle on creation day six. Human beings are a Special creation, and we are the reason God created this universe as the place where we live. I also believe God gave us dominion over all the other creatures God created for our needs on this earth. Jesus created us with the capability to reproduce human babies who contain an immortal piece we call our soul. No animal has this immortal piece, only mankind has it. Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground." (Genesis 1:26). When a human baby is aborted that fetus has an immortal soul, which is the human life force that sets us apart from the animals. When a human being dies before or after birth that immortal god-like piece leaves our earthly body! Every immortal soul will eventually end up in either heaven or hell!
Oops – this was sounding like an election ad! My hope for this commentary written every week is that it may offer an uplifting of God’s Word to increase the hope that can only come through our salvation, which guarantees the continuation of our immortal soul’s life and then looking forward to meeting Jesus Christ, immediately when your immortal soul is escorted by Jesus to where He is! Jesus died for you so that you may live with Him forever. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding. And he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, to be put into effect when the times will have reached their fulfilment—to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ. (Ephesians 1:7-10).
So, until Jesus Christ returns and takes control of the earthly government, we need to do our best to work with the authorities God has given us on this cursed earth. Paul wrote to Timothy about his need to believe God chose those in authority at that time. I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people--for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. (1 Timothy 2:1-2).
Paul also wrote to the church in Rome about this issue that God wants them, and us, to do our best to honor the people who have, in our case been elected to be in charge, even if we did not vote for them! Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you. (Romans 13:1-3).
Paul wrote, “The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.” In this great country it is legal to disagree with those in charge if it is done peacefully and without harming anyone or their property. So, let us disagree without being disagreeable! Just be happy in Jesus!
