Do Not Work For Food That Spoils, But For Food That Endures To Eternal Life!
Matthew 6:24 (NIV)
"No-one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.
What do you expect to take with you when you leave this world? Is it true you cannot take anything with you when you die? In the selected verse Jesus is teaching His disciples about what they should value the highest, and thus work the hardest to gain during their lifetime. And Jesus says, “You cannot serve both God and Money.” It certainly seems that He is saying that His followers must decide what they will do in their lifetime that will require a large devotion of their time to accomplish. It also seems He is saying you really cannot do both. Jesus also indicates that your earthly needs will be given you if you first seek salvation. Jesus said, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33).
However, most of us are not seeking to receive just our needs, but we want to become rich by worldly standards. To this working to accumulate things on this earth, He then warns us about what this will do to our priorities in this life. Jesus tells His disciples what working to get rich will do to us. Then Jesus said to his disciples, "I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." (Matthew 19:23-24). What it seems Jesus is telling us that our priorities are wrong when we want to become rich, we no longer will feel the need of help from Him.
Next Jesus tells us we must think differently about our life and what our priorities should be. We need to be reliant on Him during this lifetime and be open to His leading, like a young child may be. And he said: "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 18:3-4). When we are successful in this life and we are able to amass wealth, it becomes more difficult for us to think that all we have has been given to us by God. Thus, it becomes difficult if not impossible for us to be humble enough to thank God for our wealth, as we think we deserve it because we earned it, it was not a blessing from God. Jesus says, “whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” It is true someone who is rich may be able to humble themselves, but it is less likely, than someone who is not extremely successful in amassing worldly possessions.
Jesus spent a lot of time travelling around and teaching and healing people of their ailments, yet it seems His disciples who were with Him a lot still did not understand who He was. Then one time John writes about the disciples finally being drawn closer to Him and understanding Him more. Then Jesus’ disciples said, "Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech. Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God." "You believe at last!" Jesus answered. "But a time is coming, and has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me. "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." (John 16:29-33).
In this account Jesus says, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” So, how does this reflect upon His followers? If Jesus has overcome this world how does that trickle down to those who love and follow Jesus? How are you blessed by the fact that Jesus has overcome this world? Think about it, Jesus’s victory in this world has caused Satan to be disarmed in many ways from being able to tempt Jesus’ followers to commit sins in this world. Yes, if you truly love Jesus and wish to pattern your life after His example, you also will be able to say, “I have overcome the world."
Paul wrote about the ability of followers of Jesus to be able to live in this world but to not become a worldly person. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. (Romans 12:2). As a follower of Jesus Christ, you can choose to conform to Jesus Way of living not to the world of mankind! Worldly people are instructed by Satan, but Jesus’s people are instructed by their indwelling Holy Spirit, which was left behind for you by Jesus!
Jesus’ disciples lived with Him for three years, but He was so amazing that even they could not totally comprehend who He is. He replied, "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. The men were amazed and asked, "What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!" (Matthew 8:26-27). Who do you believe Jesus is? This is the MOST important question everyone must answer in this world before you leave it! What is you answer to this question? Be sure to study His story it is available to everyone and is only contained in one book. The only true Holy Book is the Bible, as it contains His story, which is the true History of this universe, and most importantly it tells the entire story of this earth.
Jesus once said, “Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. On him God the Father has placed his seal of approval." Then they asked him, "What must we do to do the works God requires?" Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent." (John 6:27-29). Jesus had just feed thousands of people who had come out to hear Him teach. Here He is warning them to place the correct value on what they had just been given. Jesus had just fed them for one day, and if they believe He is who He says He is, then they have met the requirement for being given salvation through the grace of Jesus Christ.
What MUST we do to be saved in this lifetime, it is NOT to be a good person, as many seem to believe! Jesus told these people and us what must be done. Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent." If you believe Jesus Christ is the Savior of this world, then you will be saved! Amen!
