Romans 7:24-25 (NIV)
What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God—through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in the sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.
My immortal soul urges me to seek to do good, but my mortal sinful nature pushes me toward doing evil actions! A certain degree of intelligence is needed by all life forms, and Jesus created all life forms to have some degree of knowledge involved to allow this life form to be able to survive in the environments Jesus first created for them to survive and thrive in. Jesus first created plant life to supply the need for food for all the creatures He would create in the week of creation. Then finally Jesus created mankind, which was a special creation, as they were created with an immortal piece that was created in the image and likeness of God.
Mankind was created as immortal and possessed the ability to only know good thoughts so they could live with the Holy God and communicate with Him on a regular basis. However, an angel we now call Satan had fallen into a sinful state where he believed he could become a god and replace God and thus, take control of all created worlds. Satan waited for a chance to gain control of the Garden of Eden and the members of Mankind that now lived there. Satan believed he could trick mankind into following him instead of believing in God and following Him.
So, Satan came up with a plan to get the humans to follow him instead of God. So, Satan posed as a serpent and struck up a conversation with Adam and Eve. Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?" The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’" "You will not surely die," the serpent said to the woman. "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized that they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. (Genesis 3:2-7).
At this point in the story, it appears that Satan told them the truth, because they did not immediately die. However, what is not immediately obvious is the fact that Adam and Eve did immediately form a mortal sinful nature, which will result in them dying on this earth, and them turning back into dust, from which God/Jesus had created Adam. Therefore, Adam and Eve now still have the immortal part of them will live forever, but a mortal part has been added to them that must die on this earth and go back to just being part of the earth!
The immortal part of them will live forever, but because it is tainted by sin, it must go to hell when the mortal part leaves it through death. So, when your mortal part dies in this cursed world, your immortal soul will go to hell, because it is tainted by sin. Well, that is certainly a sad story isn’t it!
However, wait Jesus had another plan to allow your immortal soul to go to heaven, if the sin curse is removed. So, God had His Son come into this cursed world to supply forgiveness for our sins and to set us free from the curse Satan brought into this world. Yes, I do believe that some people were saved and will be heaven before Jesus came into this world if they performed the sacrifices assigned by God, but I am not going to write about them in this commentary!
Now let us go back to the selected verses Paul wrote for the church in Rome and us today. Paul states, What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Paul is recognizing that he cannot save himself, as he knows that his sinful nature is causing him to be drawn to do evil. So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in the sinful nature a slave to the law of sin. Then believing that Jesus Christ offers salvation for us despite our sinful nature, and sins we may have committed! Paul sums it up since Jesus is his Savior Paul then writes, Thanks be to God—through Jesus Christ our Lord! Jesus perfect sacrifice will cover over our sin making as appear to be sinless when we appear before God in heaven.
Paul even makes it clearer for us. Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. (Romans 8:1-2). Our immortal soul will be headed directly to heaven when we die in this cursed world. Remember Jesus said He would come here and take His followers to where He is when we are leaving this cursed world. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. (John 14:2-3). You are ready for the trip if know Jesus?
Remember too that while we are still living on this earth, Jesus will join us when we worship with other followers of Jesus Christ, He will answer our prayers, and more importantly He will let us feel His presence with us. Jesus said, "Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them." (Matthew 18:19-20).
