Getting To Know You, Getting To Know All About You, Jesus!
John 14:15-19 (NIV)
If you love me, you will obey what I command. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counsellor to be with you for ever—the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Before long, the world will not see me any more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live.
Jesus started His ministry when He was 30 years old. Jesus died when He was crucified at around the age of 33. Most of the commentaries for the VOW are written about the 3-year ministry of Jesus Christ. This commentary is focused on the life Jesus lived as the God/Son of Man when while He still walked on this earth. It highlights some of the important things recorded about His life as a member of mankind. This is a Gospel lesson, as it is mostly just Scriptures not much of my writing. During this Lenten season it seems appropriate to focus on Jesus’ life on this earth as a member of mankind! Remember what Jesus stated in the selected verses, "If you love me, you will obey what I command.” Jesus also said, “Because I live, you also will live.” Are you living with and for Jesus?
Jesus was given birth by a virgin named Mary. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; his kingdom will never end." "How will this be," Mary asked the angel, "since I am a virgin?" The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. (Luke 1:31-35)
Jesus was born as a member of mankind and lived with His earthly parents in Nazareth. When Joseph and Mary had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth. And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him. (Luke 2:39-40)
When Jesus was about 2 years old His family was visited by Three Kings bearing gifts for this boy, they believed was going to become royalty someday. These men were guided to the location by following a star. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshipped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route. When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. "Get up," he said, "take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him." So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: "Out of Egypt I called my son." When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. (Matthew 2:9-16)
Jesus lived as a normal member of mankind for 30 years. Jesus worked in the family business of carpentry, thus He was a carpenter! Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?" And they took offence at him. (Mark 6:3)
Jesus wondered off from His parents when He was 12 years old. He stayed behind in Jerusalem and was reasoning with the Jewish teachers in the temple. Every year his parents went to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover. When he was twelve years old, they went up to the Feast, according to the custom. After the Feast was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it
After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers. When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, "Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you." "Why were you searching for me?" he asked. "Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?" (Luke 2:41-43, 46-49)
Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist, and the Holy Spirit descended on Him, and God the Father spoke of His pleasure of what Jesus was doing and was about to do! The only time the Bible reported the Trinity together on the earth at the same time. Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. But John tried to deter him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" Jesus replied, "Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfil all righteousness." Then John consented. As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased." (Matthew 3:13-17)
Then Jesus was tempted by the devil for 40 days and 40 nights in the desert. Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. After fasting for forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. Satan offered many things, and then, Satan offered to give Jesus the opportunity to rule this world. Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. "All this I will give you," he said, "if you will bow down and worship me." Jesus said to him, "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’" (Matthew 4:1-2 and 8-10)
Jesus Christ arose from the dead and lived on the earth for about 40 days after He arose from the dead. After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. (Acts 1:3)
Jesus Christ then ascended into heaven as His disciples watched. "Men of Galilee," they said, "why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven." (Acts 1:11)
