Jesus Honored His Mother Even When He Was Dying On The Cross!

John 19:26-27 (NIV)

When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing near by, he said to his mother, "Dear woman, here is your son," and to the disciple, "Here is your mother."  From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.

In this country we have named a day as a special day on which we are to honor our mother.  In the selected verses we can see how Jesus honored His mother even when He was dying on the cross.  Jesus looked down from the cross and honored His mother by showing concern for her even as He was dying.  Jesus was making sure the Mary His mother would be taken care of after His death.  Every person reading this commentary has a mother.  Some of these mothers may have already died, but on this special day, most of us will remember her with some fond memories.

Some reading this may not have known their mother who gave birth to them.  No matter whether you knew her or not, please remember that the creation of a human life is a miracle performed by God.  The psalmist wrote about this every day miracle!  For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.  I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. (Psalm 139:13-14)  Even if your conception was not a wonderful thing, it is still a miracle guided by God, as He allowed this human life to occur.

We often look for some miracle to occur that will enforce our belief that there really is a God, and that He desires us to live the good life.  Many movies have been made trying to capture some wonderful event, which will cause us to know for sure that there is a God, and that He is in control!  However, do you understand that every time you inhale the air around you that this is a miracle?  Scientists still do not know why this oxygen is available?  Sure they can tell us about plants giving off oxygen and taking in carbon dioxide, but they really do not know why!  This miracle was created by God and continues only at His desire.  The circle of life attests to the great design of the great Designer!

Most of us reading this will know that we have learned a lot from our mother.  Many of us will remember many of the proofs that have led us to have a strong faith were learned from our mother.  Paul noted the faith displayed by Timothy was inherited or learned from his mother and even his grandmother.  I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also. (2 Timothy 1:5)  If you are fortunate enough to still have a grandmother do not forget to honor her too on this special day set aside for honoring mothers.

For those of us who do not have a mother or grandmother still living, or for those of us who may not want to honor our birth mother, please think of someone who may not be remember fondly by someone else, on this special day, and call them, as a way of honoring them too!

The birth of a human being is not like the birth of any animal, as a member of mankind is born with an immortal soul that will never die.  When an animal dies that is the end of it, except that we may treasure the memory of a special pet in our heart.  The birth of a member of mankind starts a life that will never end!  Mothers you have a piece of eternity that was given life by God through you!

Husbands do not forget to somehow honor your wife on this day, as she is the mother of your children, and thus deserves to be honored by you too!  Mothers please remember that you carried a forming human being in your body, and that that miraculous delivery was possible because of the miracles of birth that God has allowed to occur.

Some women were not able to conceive and give birth, but some of them have become the best mothers of all.  Being a mother to someone is a miracle too.  If God has allowed you to adopt some miraculous human being, and you have given, or are giving a part of your life to loving what God has made, then please be sure to realize how important your life is to the child or children whom you are raising, or have raised!  May God bless you by surrounding you with people who love you!

This Sunday is that special day upon which we are to honor some motherly people who have been an important part of our lives!  If you do not have any person still living, which you may honor on this day, try to think of someone you could visit as a way of honoring them.  Is there someone who may be cheered up by receiving a call from you on this special day?

Wishing all of the mothers out there,

Happy Mother’s Day!!

Your brother in life through Adam, your brother in eternity through Jesus,
